How to Perform a Hard Reload, Clear Cache, and Clear Cookies on Desktop Browsers

From time to time, clearing your browser’s cache and cookies or performing a hard reload can help resolve issues with loading web pages. Below are detailed instructions for performing tasks on three popular browsers.

Google Chrome (Desktop)

1. Hard Reload

  • Open the webpage you are experiencing issues with.
  • Right-click the Reload button (🔄) in the toolbar or press F12 to open Developer Tools.
  • Once DevTools is open, right-click the Reload button again and choose:
    • Normal Reload (just refreshes the page).
    • Hard Reload (forces the page to load from the server, ignoring cache).
    • Empty Cache and Hard Reload (clears the browser's cache and forces a complete reload of the page).

2. Clear Cache and Cookies

  • Click the three-dot menu (⁝) in the upper-right corner of Chrome.
  • Navigate to SettingsPrivacy and SecurityClear browsing data.
  • Select a time range (such as Last hour or All time).
  • Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  • Click Clear data.

Microsoft Edge (Desktop)

1. Hard Reload

  • Open the page you need to reload.
  • Right-click the Reload button (🔄) or press F12 to open the Developer Tools.
  • Right-click the Reload button and select:
    • Normal Reload (simple refresh).
    • Hard Reload (forces a fresh page load without cached files).
    • Empty Cache and Hard Reload (empties the cache and reloads the entire page from scratch).

2. Clear Cache and Cookies

  • Click the three-dot menu (⁝) in the top-right corner.
  • Go to SettingsPrivacy, search, and servicesClear browsing data.
  • Select a time range (e.g., Last 24 hours or All time).
  • Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  • Click Clear now.

Safari (Desktop)

1. Hard Reload

  • Press Option + Command + E to clear the cache, followed by Command + R to reload the page.

2. Clear Cache

  • In the Safari menu, go to SafariPreferences.
  • Click the Advanced tab and check the box for the Show Develop menu in menu bar.
  • Now, go to the Develop menu in the menu bar and select Empty Caches.

3. Clear Cookies

  • In SafariPreferencesPrivacy, click Manage Website Data.
  • Select either Remove All or choose individual sites and click Remove.
